Sewing Skill Training: Reka’s Journey to Financial Independence

N.Reka, a 31-year-old mother of two from Vembudithalam village in Salem district, Tamil Nadu, was struggling to make ends meet on her husband’s modest income. With limited educational qualifications, her job prospects were scarce, and she felt confined to traditional homemaking roles. However, Reka had a dream: to become financially independent and contribute to her family’s future.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

In April 2024, Reka discovered the Desai Foundation Trust free tailoring class, conducted in partnership with Salem Don Bosco Anbu Illam and SPS India Foundation. She enrolled in the 3-month (April 2024 to June 2024) training program, designed to empower rural women with skills to improve their livelihoods.

Training Experience

During the course, Reka mastered the fundamentals of tailoring, from stitching simple garments to operating sewing machines. She learned to create various items, including stretch pillows, chemises, and other dresses. The program also included entrepreneurial training, teaching women how to run a small business, manage finances, and cater to local markets.

Transformation and Impact

Upon completing the course, Reka gained the confidence and skills to start earning. She began working as a stretcher in a nearby town, earning ₹250 per day. Her contributions significantly improved her household income, enabling her to provide a better quality of life for her children and secure their education.

A Role Model Emerges
