Consultation on Migrant Welfare Held in Salem

On January 25, 2025, over 50 participants gathered at Don Bosco Anbu Illam in Salem for a significant consultation aimed at addressing the challenges faced by distressed migrant workers. The event brought together diverse stakeholders, including NGOs, trade unions, social work colleges, religious leaders, and social workers, all focused on improving migrant welfare in Tamil Nadu.

The consultation aimed to: Address critical issues faced by migrant workers, such as accidents, emergencies, and fatalities.

Promote collaboration among Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to protect and advance the rights of migrant workers.

Key discussions included training initiatives for NGOs and social workers, compulsory registration of migrant workers, legal support, and mapping workplaces with high migrant populations. There were also calls for improved education for migrant children and the creation of migrant help desks at transportation hubs.

The event led to the Salem Initiative for Migrants, a coordination group that will take immediate actions, including raising awareness about migrant helplines and setting up help desks at key locations.

This consultation marked a vital step toward creating a stronger network and providing comprehensive support for migrant workers across the region. Stay tuned for updates on this initiative’s progress.
